Raymond Price, MD, FACS

Recognized as an international leader and pioneer in expanding the role of surgery in public health, Dr. Price’s work highlights the dramatic impact surgery can have on communities, economies and individuals. Dr. Price co-founded (2011) and served as the director of the Center for Global Surgery at the University of Utah (2015-2020).  He continues to support the growth of the academic global surgery program serving as Vice-chair for Global Health in the Department of Surgery.  He also serves as Vice-chair/ Director of Graduate Surgical Education in the Department of Surgery at Intermountain Medical Center, Intermountain Healthcare. 

Dr. Price received his BS in Chemistry from the University of Utah, MD from Harvard Medical School, and completed his surgical residency at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Price is a Clinical Professor (Department of Surgery) and Adjunct Associate Professor (Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, Division of Public Health) at the University of Utah.  He has participated in or led over 40 medical and surgical expeditions to Asia, Latin America, and Africa.  In Mongolia, he taught and helped establish laparoscopic surgery countrywide transitioning the country from open cholecystectomy to laparoscopic.  Dr. Price is a Visiting Professor, Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences.  He has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and books including the seminal book “Global Surgery and Public Health, a New Paradigm”.

Dr. Price serves (or has served) in many leadership positions with the World Health Organization Global Initiative for Emergency and Essential Surgical Care, the Society of American and Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, and the International Surgical Society.  He has helped guide the establishment of the Association of Academic Global Surgery (AAGS).

Dr. Price enjoyed participating in developing and expanding the impact of the SAGES Guidelines Committee (20 years) , and continuing worldwide efforts of the Global Affairs Committee.

Dr. Price served as a member of the Intermountain Trauma Team for 24 years, a member of the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (co-author of the Rural Trauma Team Development Course 3rd and 4th editions), and has been a leader in improving trauma care regionally, nationally, and internationally.  He served on the Federal International Medical and Surgical Response Team and was the director of the Haiti disaster response medical team for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 2010. 

Honors received include: Distinguished Alumni Award University of Utah (2019), the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma ATLS Styner Meritorious Service Award (2019), American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) Excellence in Humanistic Clinical Care Award (2019), Utah Medical Association Physician of the Year (2017), The Presidential Friendship Medal of Mongolia (the highest medal Mongolia gives to foreigners)(2012), American College of Surgeons-Pfizer International Volunteerism Award (2012), a Medal of Honor from the Minister of Health of Mongolia (2009), and multiple teaching awards including the University of Utah Dr. Clark Lowe Rich Distinguished Surgeon and Mentor Award (2017). His greatest work, however, is with his wonderful wife Anne and their 7 daughters and one son who all volunteer internationally and at home.
